About Point Chevalier Drama Club
Point Chevalier Drama Club has been part of the neighbourhood since 2017, offering Stage and Screen Acting classes both in and after school for students aged 6–17 in a fun and supportive environment.
Led by actor and director Nicole Whippy, and supported by some of the best teachers in the industry, our focus is on helping students become Confident, Creative, and Collaborative through the art of drama.
Our successful in-school drama programme runs every Tuesday at Point Chevalier Primary School. Each term focuses on a new learning outcome, from ensemble building and public speaking to improvisation and curriculum-aligned projects. For example, during the Rehu Tai Oral Language competition, students practised their speeches, spoken word pieces, and raps in class time, developing confidence and presentation skills in a safe and encouraging space. Parents are often invited to open classes or performances to see their child’s progress.
Their senior students devised and performed two original shows for their school community in 2025- The Easter Olympics and the interactive Halloween production Wax Museum. This year the senior students performed The Day The Easter Eggs Quit for their parents and school to wrap their first term.
Nicole has also spent the beginning of 2026 teaching drama to the amazing tamariki at Grey Lynn Primary. We are looking forward to continuing there for Term 2.
If your school would like to bring drama into your learning programme, we’d love to hear from you!
Our after-school drama students have performed all over Point Chevalier. Having no community theatre space hasn’t stopped us, instead, we take our shows to the community! From Easter shows at the Subud Hall and Pt Chevalier Library to singing performances at Selwyn Village, and Halloween and Christmas shows at our community centre and local bowling club. We even staged an outdoor performance of Where The Wild Things Are at Coyle Park, using the playground as our stage.
We’re very active in the community, so keep an eye out for us.
Our popular Acting for Screen courses have been running for four years, with tutors including Dave Van Horn (Children’s Acting Coach for Netflix’s Sweet Tooth, Minecraft, and Rings of Power), Shortland Street casting directors Claire Dougan, Matt Dwyer, and Andrea Kelland, and popular TV actors Marianne Infante, Antonia Prebble, and Amelia Reid.
Under our guidance, several students have auditioned for and been cast in Shortland Street, Taskmaster, Spelling Bee, Educators, and a range of short films. Some of our talented young performers have also been hired as professional voice-over artists.
