Learn to Read the Sky

Overview:

Gain real-world meteorological knowledge and flight planning skills that every pilot needs to fly safely and confidently. This immersive one-day course is designed for aspiring aviators aged 11–17 who want to understand how weather affects flying and how to plan flights with safety and accuracy in mind.

Students will explore the structure of the atmosphere, pressure systems, and cloud development, with a specific focus on the air masses and weather patterns typically seen in the UK.

You’ll learn how to analyse real aviation weather charts and forecasts, and how to make accurate 48-hour predictions using professional tools available to every pilot. Most importantly, you'll leave with the ability to apply this knowledge every single day—whether you’re preparing for a flight or just forecasting from your own home.

Using a mix of classroom instruction, group exercises, and Flight simulator-based training, students will see the theory in action and develop genuine forecasting confidence. This course builds core understanding from the PPL Meteorology syllabus and translates it into practical planning and decision-making for VFR flight.

Step into the pilot’s seat and learn how real-world aviators plan and navigate their flights across the UK skies. Our Metreology and Flight Forecasting  Day Course is designed for aspiring aviators aged 11–17 who are ready to take their flying knowledge to the next level using official UK CAA methods and tools.

What You’ll Learn Understanding Meteorology
  • The structure of the atmosphere and its impact on aviation
  • UK air masses and how they affect local weather
  • Movement and interaction of warm and cold fronts
  • Interpreting cloud types, fog, turbulence, visibility, and precipitation
  • Understanding synoptic charts, pressure systems, and wind behaviour
  • How to read and use METARs, TAFs, and official aviation forecasts
  • Using online tools to build your own daily forecasts up to 48 hours out

Applying to Flight Planning

  • Selecting a safe VFR route based on expected weather conditions
  • Planning with real-time data: visibility, wind, cloud base, and precipitation
  • Understanding crosswind impact, turbulence risk, and alternates
  • Interpreting NOTAMs, weather warnings, and airport conditions
  • Planning for diversion scenarios and changing weather
  • Making informed go/no-go decisions with a pilot’s mindset
  • Simulator Weather Challenge – Fly in Realistic Conditions

In the final part of the course, students will plan and fly a short route using our flight simulators—under realistic weather conditions based on their forecast. This challenge helps students apply everything they've learned: reading the forecast, adjusting in real time, and staying on course despite low visibility, turbulence, or changing winds.

What’s Included:
  • Printed aviation synoptic charts and real-world weather briefings
  • Daily forecast planning templates and briefing checklists
  • Take-home reference pack aligned to PPL Meteorology syllabus
  • Full access to our simulator setup with instructor guidance
