Robotics Course

Important Information:

FREE trials are available
No prior robotics or coding experience required
Students can start at any time during the year

The Robotics Course is the foundational robotics program at the Adelaide Robotics and Computer Science Academy (ARCSA). It is designed for students who are beginning their journey in robotics and coding and want to understand how robots think, sense, decide, and act.

This course lays the groundwork for all future robotics and programming studies at ARCSA, including the advanced Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (AIR) program.

A Structured Introduction to Robotics

The curriculum is based on Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Academy, a world-class provider of STEM education. Students are guided through a carefully structured progression that introduces robotics as a system of logic, sensing, decision-making, and problem-solving.

Rather than focusing on trial and error, students develop Computational Thinking, learning to analyse problems, design solutions, and refine their approach through iteration.

What Students Learn

Throughout the course, students explore:
  • What robots are and how they are classified
  • How robots are used in modern society
  • How robots sense their environment
  • How robots make decisions
  • How logic, mathematics, and programming work together

Learning takes place through structured challenges and real-world inspired scenarios that encourage curiosity, creativity, and teamwork.

Curriculum Overview

Introduction to Robotics

  • History and classification of robots
  • Robots in society and education
  • How robots “think”

Movement and Control

  • Computational thinking foundations
  • Basic movement and coordination challenges

Sensors and Perception

  • Touch, ultrasonic, gyroscopic, colour and light sensors
  • Interpreting sensor data

Decision-Making

  • Loops and conditional logic
  • Line tracking and obstacle navigation

Data, Mathematics, and Logic

  • Variables and logic operators
  • Data logging, graphs, and analysis
  • Mathematical reasoning in robotics

Final Challenge

  • Engineering design process
  • Planning, testing, and iteration
  • Solving a complex “Search and Rescue” robotics challenge

Duration and Certification

The course typically takes approximately one year to complete.

At the end of the course, students may sit an optional exam. Successful candidates receive a certificate from Carnegie Mellon University, recognising their achievement in foundational robotics and computational thinking.

Preparing for the Next Step

This Robotics Course prepares students to progress into ARCSA’s Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (AIR) program, where they transition from visual programming to text-based coding and more advanced robotic systems.
