Code of Conduct

Everyone involved in sports is expected to abide by the Westmere Code of Conduct.

Westmere School | Te Rehu Sports Code of Conduct

At Westmere School |Te Rehu we recognise the importance of sport and physical exercise. We take pride in our sports teams and aim to provide opportunities to all children to participate in sports to help them to develop social and communication skills while building confidence, sport specific skills, creating mastery and striving for excellence in a friendly, fun environment. Sports creates opportunities for children to meet others, expand their friendships and it builds a strong Westmere School community spirit, aiding the children to develop pride in themselves and the School.

This code of conduct is to reinforce our expectations on the roles everyone plays to make sure our childrens experiences remain positive. We need to foster children who are respectful, coachable, great teammates, mentally tough, resilient and try their best. Through participation in sport, children have the opportunity to demonstrate and foster the Westmere Way values of Respect, Inclusion, Care, and Excellence.

This Code of Conduct applies to all sports and physical activity when representing Westmere | Te Rehu whether it takes place at school or outside of the school. All students and parents/caregivers are expected to sign and abide by this Sports Code of Conduct.

The Westmere Way values are acknowledged as the guiding principle of behaviour for everyone involved in Westmere sport.

Respect | Manaakita: We respect ourselves, each other.
Inclusion | Kotahitanga: We accept, value and celebrate each other's difference.
Excellence | Hiranga: We always try our best.
Care | Whanaungatanga: We encourage, support and care for each other.

Code of Conduct for Students:

I will always behave in a manner consistent with the Westmere Way values. This means that I will:

always play by the rules and respect the decision of an official whatever the circumstances.
be committed to the team for the full season. Assist my parent/caregiver to ensure that I attend all trainings and games where possible.
listen, respect and cooperate with my coach and team.
work equally hard for myself and my team to do our best.
always be a good sport and applaud good play whether by my own team or the opposition. Display modesty in victory and graciousness in defeat.
participate for my own enjoyment and benefit, not just to please parents and coaches.
not put people down or bully them. I will treat all players as I would like to be treated and respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
respect the equipment.
remember to thank my coach, the official and the opposition at the end of the game.

Code of Conduct for Parents/Caregivers, Spectators and Supporters:

I/We will always conduct myself/ourselves in a manner that is consistent with the Westmere Way values. This means that I/we will:

encourage our child to always play within the rules, respect officials and coaches decisions and the principles of fair play.
respect that our child is involved for their own enjoyment not mine/ours and I/we will not pressure, criticise or ridicule our child or others in any way.
applaud effort and hard work as well as success.
respect the rights, dignity and worth of all people involved in the game, regardless of their gender, ability, cultural or religious background.
always act in a positive manner on the side-line.
always support the coach. Remember coaches are volunteers. Their time and efforts are for the benefit of your child. Refrain from profane or abusive language or criticism of the coach or official. [Anyone deemed to be abusive may be asked by officials to leave the ground immediately.]
understand that it is my/our responsibility to ensure my/our child arrives and is picked up on time for practices and games and if our child is unable to attend I/we will inform the team manager in a timely manner.
show my/our appreciation of volunteers and those who help make sport happen.
respect and adhere to any selection process that the school has in place.
above all, act as a positive role model for my/our child and team.

Code of Conduct for Coaches/Managers:

I will conduct myself in a manner that is consistent with the Westmere Way values. This means that I will:

lead by example and encourage sportsmanship.
develop the teams respect for officials and referees.
respect the decisions of referees, coaches and officials.
insist on fair play and give all players equal opportunity to participate in the game.
respect the rights, dignity and worth of all people involved in the game, regardless of their gender, ability or cultural background.
be generous with my praise when it is deserved and positively reinforce the actions of all players.
applaud effort and hard work as well as success.
create an enjoyable, hard working and fun environment.
