Why should I take this class
Relax and get grounded with clay.
In this evening class you will learn some simple hand building techniques which will enable you to create your own bowls, cups and sculptural forms alike. We will also explore some simple but effective techniques to add interesting textural and coloured surfaces to your creations without the need to have a deep understanding of glazing.
Each student will get to take away a series of handmade, glazed and fired ceramic objects.
- Introductions and studio orientation
- Best practice guidelines explained
- Get to know the properties of clay and what we can do with it as it transitions through a variety of stages
- A weekly focus on one of the basic hand-building construction techniques - pinch pots, coiling and slab - with textural and decorative surface techniques incorporated into the classes throughout the term
- In each of the first four classes we will focus on one specific construction technique per session
- Create small vessels or sculptural forms following tutor demonstrations at the start of each class
Week 1: pinch pots
Week 2: slab working using plaster moulds
Week 3: slab cylinders
Week 4: coiling
Weeks 5 to 7: explore your own project using the construction techniques you have learned as well as basic glazing techniques
- Gain an understanding of some of the different types of clay and firing techniques as well as knowledge of a variety of basic hand-building techniques
- Develop an understanding of best practice guidelines
- Gain an understanding of a range of finishing techniques
- Leave the course with a series of handmade, glazed and fired ceramic objects
