Run by TAPAC - The Auckland Performing Arts Centre

This class is suitable for those who have done quite a few years of ballet/dance as a child/young person or those who want to progress from the beginners level class.

A mindful class (allowing for the body to remember the moves!) though also playful and lighthearted with as much (or as little) physicality as your fitness level allows!

You will improve your fitness and flexibility and be energized, in this fun and elegant class!
We welcome you to trial this class for $20 (cash payable directly to tutor), this does not guarantee a place in the course will be reserved for you and is not available if the class is full. Please note that viewing this class is not available.

What to wear:
Please wear stretchy quite close fitting tights or leggings and tees or tops.
Women please wear your hair tied back off your face and neck (so you can dance without it falling in your face)
Men please wear a dance belt (they can be purchased at Pure Dance on New North Road)
Footwear - you can wear sports socks at first if you like (preferably cotton, tight fitting) and once you understand how the feet need to work you can purchase ballet shoes.

Teaching Artist: MaryJane O'Reilly QSM, ARAD
MaryJane studied ballet since she was 4 years old – until ultimately becoming a professional ballet dancer in her late teens.

Having been a ballet student from a very young age, she gained her Solo Seal while at the National Ballet School (now the NZ School of Dance) in Wellington 1968 and consequently won the highly coveted RAD scholarship to study ballet in the UK, where she attended the Royal Ballet School in 1970.
Prior to this she was a professional dancer with the NZ Ballet for a year in 1969 with Paul Gnatt as Director, highlights include performing as a soloist in Russell Kerr’s original work ‘Symphony in C, dancing a Nursemaid role in ‘Petrouchka’ and in ‘Cinderella’.

She performed in an opera ballet company in Austria in 1971 then took time out to travel and study contemporary dance finally ending up back in New Zealand to co–found, dance, choreograph and ultimately direct the Limbs Dance Company 1977 - 86.

MaryJane has kept studying and teaching ballet throughout all her reincarnations as a dancer, choreographer and artistic director.

“My passion in teaching ballet is to teach and share the technique, the aesthetic, the musicality of ballet. I aim to celebrate the beauty of it and make it an enjoyable experience to learn or revisit this beautiful art form”.
