Ellen Murfitt is a recent graduate from the New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī, completing her Bachelor of Music (First Class Hons) in violin performance in 2019. Originally from Hawkes Bay, she has been learning and playing the violin since the age of 7 years old.
She discovered a love of ensemble playing through the NZCT Chamber Music Contest, winning the Hawke’s Bay District Finals in 2014 and 2015.
In 2016, Ellen moved to Wellington to begin her Bachelor of Music majoring in classical performance under the tuition of Helene Pohl (New Zealand String Quartet). Since then, she has enjoyed performing in the likes of New Zealand School of Music Orchestra, Wellington Youth Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra, Adam Summer School, and Sichuan Symphony Orchestra (China).
As a beginner, Ellen learned music theory and violin through a number of different methods, including Kodaly, Colour Strings and the Orff Approach. Upon moving to Wellington, she gained experience teaching violin through the Suzuki method.
Her own teaching style draws on this diverse range of learning material, catering to the needs and interests of each student. It is a high priority for Ellen to create a safe space for experimentation, expression, and learning within her lessons so that students can build in confidence and skill through their instrument
