Emily Wilby grew up in Wellington where she began learning violin at the age of eight years old. She continued her violin studies throughout school and university, and in 2014 graduated from the University of Canterbury with a BMus in Violin Performance and a BA(Hons) in International Relations and Chinese Language. She has since completed a Master of Arts in Teaching Chinese from East China Normal University and is now based in Wellington, where she is training to become a primary school teacher.

As a violin teacher, Emily has taught both privately and in music centres, including at the Wellington Music Centre, St Thomas of Canterbury College, and the Shanghai United International Schools Primo Music Programme. She is equally at home teaching individual and group lessons, and is also comfortable teaching in Mandarin Chinese. Emily loves working with students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds, and draws on a range of teaching methods to find something that works for each student’s individual needs. Cultivating creativity, enjoyment and a love of music are her key teaching philosophies.

Emily has played in a range of orchestras and ensembles, including the NZSO National Youth Orchestra, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, the Shanghai City Symphony Orchestra, and the ELTE Béla Bartók Orchestra in Budapest. Currently, she plays in the Wellington Chamber Orchestra and The Capital Band. Outside of violin and her teaching studies, Emily spends her time practicing yoga, writing about zero waste and exploring the outdoors.
