About Joanna Dann:
Joanna has loved playing music from an early age, whether playing a part in a symphony orchestra, jamming on jazz standards with her family, or exploring the complexities of solo Bach. She grew up in Palmerston North and later pursued cello studies at the University of Waikato with James Tennant and the University of Otago with Helen du Plessis.
During her university years, she performed with Opus Orchestra in Hamilton, Dunedin Symphony Orchestra and the NZSO National Youth Orchestra. Since completing her studies in early 2022 she has been teaching music in Wellington and Palmerston North and exploring an interest in conducting part-time.
Throughout her studies Joanna was teaching cello on the side and draws from favourite aspects of her different tutors and experiences for her own teaching. She is conscious of building good habits in cello technique during the early stages of learning with a focus on a relaxed, natural way of approaching the instrument.
Her aim is to inspire students to hone their craft and develop their own musical personality and is open to exploring different genres of interest to the student.
