Māoriland partners with communities around Aotearoa to present E Tū Whānau
Filmmaking Workshops
Māori filmmakers aged in their early 20's are selected from around New Zealand
to lead filmmaking workshops within communities across Aotearoa
Working together over 2-3 days, participants aged between 14 - 24 make short
films that tell stories of community and Indigenous identity from their perspective
as young Indigenous peoples.

Over the 2–3 days, rangatahi will work alongside young Māori filmmakers to create short films that tell stories from their own perspectives, grounded in identity, community and creativity. The films created are then entered into the E Tū Whānau Rangatahi Film Challenge.

These workshops are designed for all skill levels, whether rangatahi are completely new to filmmaking or already passionate about storytelling.

Workshop Program
Day One

1.Film screening & Intentions
Intentions for the workshop
Introduction to our work including films made in previous ETW workshops and
NPIP films

2.Breakdown of STAR and how films are structured.
We usually breakdown Lion King or Moana with them so they really understand.
They are then divided into teams where they breakdown their film of choice into
STAR. After this they must present their STAR presentation back to the rest of
the group.

3.Brainstorming & script writing
During this process, everyone jumps back into their groups to bounce ideas off
each other whilst our facilitators float around the room, assisting where they can.
The script writing aspect of our workshop is where the most energy is required.
It’s always hard to predict how long it will take for each team to come up with
their story, sometimes it helps for facilitators to step in and offer suggestions to
speed up the process.

4.Pitching.
We break down what a pitch is and how it can be applied to film. For pitching
they get back into their groups and breakdown their film story into the formula
for a pitch. Then they pitch it! Sometimes it can be hard for rangatahi to pitch as
they get a bit nervous so we always make sure to hype them up.

Day Two: Filming
Day 2 is when everyone gets out and shoots their film!
1.Our day starts with a karakia and a check up on how the rangatahi are feeling.
2.Assign roles
3.In each team we make sure to identify who is interested in doing what (e.g acting,
directing, camera etc…). We take time to sit down with those who put their hands
up to film and introduce them to a camera.
4.Core Skills : Rangatahi are divided into four groups and briefed on their chosen
specialty:
Camera
Sound
Editing
Director/ Writer & Actors
5.Filming!

Day Three: Editing & Screening
1.Our final day starts with a karakia and a check up on how the rangatahi are feeling.
2.If necessary teams will continue to film. Where possible, the team will be split so that
the editors can begin to assemble the film.
3.Editing - supported by Facilitators
4.End of Day/ Evening Screening: Family and friends are invited to support their young
people at the official premiere of the films made during the workshop. All
participants receive a certificate for participating.
Where necessary, the workshop can be shrunk to two days. The extra day allows more
time for the participants to craft their film and be fully involved in editing.
