About Chris
New Zealand Baritone Chris Berentson studied at the Canberra School of Music, Australian National University under Anthea Moller. He is a recipient of both the Kornfeld Scholarship for post graduate singers, and a Master of Music Performance Voice with first class honours. He is featured as a baritone soloist on the world premier recording of Alfred Hill’s Life with the Dominion Quartet for NAXOS.
He has sung widely in Opera, Oratorio and Recital on both sides of the Tasman.
In July 2023, he travelled to Germany to take on the title role in Mozart’s Don Giovanni for Lyric Opera Studio Weimar. He was then invited to stay on and perform Sprecher in their Summer Season of Die Zauberflöte. Recent New Zealand performances include an opera recital as part of Old St Pauls’ 2024 winter recital series.
Chris has taught singing for more than 20 years in Wellington Colleges including Newlands College, St Pats Kilbirnie, and Scots College where he was also the first Choir Master to take a male choir of Trebles Altos Tenors and Basses to the Big Sing.
His teaching encompasses old school vocal techniques, and strives to make the student feel at ease in themselves, in order to produce the best sound.
