New to Parnell – Enjoy Friday afternoons with Songwriting and Strings, a warm and welcoming exclusive 3-part series led by acclaimed musician-singer-songwriter duo Brenda Liddiard and Mark Laurent.
Each week offers a unique focus: from hands-on string techniques (guitar, ukulele, mandolin and more), to discovering your voice as a performer, and diving into the art of songwriting.
Whether you're a beginner or looking to grow creatively, these intimate sessions are a safe space to explore your musical side, build confidence, and connect through music.
Week 1 – Strings
Grow your skills with lead guitar techniques, chord variations, and acoustic/electric crossover. Includes finger-picking, plectrum work, and optional exploration of ukulele, mandolin, and Rowan lute.
Week 2 – The Heart of the Performer
Find your voice as a performer and connect with your audience. A supportive space to build confidence and express yourself authentically.
Week 3 – Songwriters Seminar
Unlock your songwriting potential—from inspiration to lyrics and melody. Develop your own style in a safe and creative environment.

Brenda Liddiard and Mark Laurent are a seasoned singer-songwriter duo with decades of experience performing, recording, and touring throughout New Zealand, Australia, and the UK. Drawing from folk, alt-country, blues, and acoustic traditions, they craft original songs that are rich in lyrical depth and musical nuance. Brenda is known for her emotive vocals and poetic storytelling, while Mark brings expressive guitar work and a wide-ranging musical palette. Together, they create intimate, heartfelt performances that blend strings, songcraft, and spoken word—offering a unique, grassroots approach to music that resonates deeply with audiences.
The Village Square Trust runs an exciting programme of Community Classes and Activities at Parnell Community Centre. Our Term 3 programme runs from July to September, 2023.
Start as a beginner or join us to improve your grammar and conversation! We offer multi-level language classes in French, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese and Te Reo.
Our Healthy Body & Mind Classes are among the most popular held at Parnell Community Centre. Classes in Hatha Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, Move and Meditate, Senior Swans, SpinPoi and Dance with Donna.
Discover a hidden talent as you learn or build on your skills from our classes in drawing, painting, embroidery, artistry of flowers, writing, and dance.
Join in one of our fun social groups. One $15 annual fee covers your membership for all social activities, then pay a small fee ($3-$8) per session, which includes tea, coffee and biscuits.
