Run by Arts a Go Go! Performing Arts School for Kids Upper Hutt Ltd

This class is for more experienced Irish Dancers and entry is at the discretion of the teacher as the student progresses from the junior class.

Irish Dancing is an energetic style of dance where students will learn, and experience enjoyment through, traditional Irish steps. Irish Dancing teaches self discipline, improves coordination as students master the intricate movements, increases fitness and builds self confidence in a positive environment. Students will also come to appreciate the lively rhythms of Irish Dancing music. The classes will focus on both Step Dancing (solo dancing) and Ceili Dancing (team dancing), progressing the dancers from beginner steps such as the Light Jig and Easy Reel through to more complicated steps such as the Slip Jig, Hornpipe and Hard Shoe dancing. Irish Dancing at Arts a Go Go! is performance based, rather than competitive. Students perform in the major Arts a Go Go! show in November each year at Lower Hutt Little Theatre, and are often asked to perform at public events. (If you would prefer your child enrol in a competitive class, we recommend Reeljig Irish Dancers or Kerry School of Irish Dance.)

Irish Dancing Teacher: Shannon Hullet
Shannon has been an Irish Dancer since the age of 5. She has competed all over New Zealand and Australia. She has placed in the top 5 at the New Zealand Nationals multiple times which qualified her for the World Championships. In Australia, she was ranked in the top 20 which was one of her greatest achievements. Throughout her years as a dancer, she has loved taking the time to give direction and guidance to younger dancers in order to help them to grow and learn just as she did. Shannon currently attends Victoria University where she is completing a Bachelors Degree in Classics and History. She looks forward to meeting your child and passing on her passion, skills and knowledge of Irish Dance.

Observing Classes
Parents and caregivers are welcome at Arts a Go Go! and there is room to wait should they wish to, however, for all classes other than those for pre-schoolers and 5 year olds, beyond the first day of term, parents and siblings are not to stay in the room where instruction is taking place. This is to avoid affecting the concentration of students and teaching staff, and affecting the children's confidence by people watching them as they create, learn and experiment. On the second to last week of terms 1 and 2, there will be parent viewing day, where parents and family have the opportunity to observe the classes in action, and see the progress their children have made. This does not apply in terms 3 and 4 when we are show focused.

Certificates and Medals

At the completion of each term, students will be presented with an Arts a Go Go! participation certificate in recognition of attendance, attitude and commitment. Students are presented with a bronze Arts a Go Go! medal after 1 year, a silver medal after 2 years, and a gold medal after 3 years, bronze trophy after 4 years and more awards and trophies as they progress. Arts a Go Go! Irish Dancing certificates are also awarded as each new dance is accomplished.
